I am observing the night sky with the intention of drawing a starry sky for my new work, which will be exhibited at the Karuizawa Senju Hiroshi Museum from March 1st. It was a cold day, minus 10 degrees celcius, and the stars were clearly visible.

As the new year approaches, staffs are cleaning our studio throughly while I work. I try to keep my studio clean, but it still ended up getting dirty.

I am hanging New Year's decoration. It's a moment when you feel Japanese even though being away from Japan.

In 2015, I visited the cave where Kukai is said to have attained enlightenment 1,200 years ago.  I have tried to paint, but was unsuccessful. 10 years later, I am taking the challenge again.

When I visited Mikunido cave on Cape Muroto in 2015, it looked to me such an ordinary cave. At the time, I felt I cannot make strong painting out of this site. But now, when I think that Kukai attained enlightenment even in a place like this, I am overwhelmed by its significance. Now, I want to challenge again.

Just as many people walk the pilgrimage route, for me as a painter, painting rocky mountains, and trees is a way to relive the life of Kukai.  It is rigorous process that feels like training. Unrestrained by anything, I paint each rock while imagining the Mikunido-cave from 1,200 years ago.
