This is at a Master class held in Kyoto University of the Art and Design. She is a doctoral candiate, Ms. You Yuki from Taiwan. The class is for young artists who want to be professional artists. It is heated and everyone is very serious.
Dr. Gerald Curtis, a professor emeritus of political Science at Columbia University, came to visit Koysan. He was awarded Kentaro Kaneko Special Award this year from the America-Japan Society. He kindly brought the certificate to Koyasan, since I could not attend the ceremony held in Tokyo earlier in the month. It was such a humbling experience to receive the same award with such a distiguished scholar.
We had a dicussion on religion and art with the chief priest of Zenkoji Temple. He is a classmate of mine from Tokyo University of the Arts. We studied together from prep school to graduate school. He is a highly sought after monk, at the same time a wonderful pastel artist.
My young brother, Akira Senju, was in charge of music when I was in charge of the art for this production in Tokyo. A day before the performance, we work till last minute to improve and perfect the stage. Unfortunately, I won't be able to be present since I have to give a lecture in Kyoto.
To use every minutes of my time in Japan, I came to sketch in Kyoto. My days are hectic, but when I sketch, I regain myself as a painter.
At the Dojima River Forum in Osaka, I am judging a children's painting contest with Akiya Takahashi, director of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, and Yuji Yamashita, professor at Meiji Gakuin University. There were some great works.
